Nancy Bloomer Deussen is a San Francisco Bay Area composer known for her accessible, melodic contemporary compositions. Since Ms Bloomer Deussen began composing in the 1950s she has been inspired by the beauty of nature and some of her earliest works reflect this. More recently, she has identified with the environmental movement as she has gradually come to realize that all human life will depend upon how well we preserve our precious natural resources. To work toward these environmental goals Ms Bloomer Deussen has composed numerous compositions for enviromental groups and ensembles about nature and with an ecological message in the belief that creative artists like herself can, in fact, influence how well we humans will deal with the problem of preserving our resources. Following is a list of some of these works:
Mrs Bloomer Deussen is the co-founder of the National Association of Composers Bay Area Chapter and currently their President Emeritus. She is the recipent of several awards for composition including: First prize winner of the Mu Phi Epsilon Original Composition Competition in 1985 and 1999, First Prize winner in the Britten on-the-Bay Competition in 1996, winner of the Bay Area Composer's Symposium Orchestral Performances Award sponsored by The Marin Symphony in 1994, performance award in The Delius Composition Competition in 1992, winner of The Marmor Chamber Music Composition Competition in 2002 and runner up in several other competitions.
